Alices Traum

Anwesend. Aufgehoben.
Presenting some of the most intelligent texts, being kept in the fund of The Prinzhorn Collection, Berlin based writer and director Gerd Hartmann has turned stories of the inmates of insane asylums from the early 20th century into tableaus of poetic and vivid power. Awardwinning author Martin Kluger recommended "Presence. Annuled. - Life signs from Asylum" in Der Tagesspiegel: "Theatre as an adventure, beyond all discourses, neither a moral nor a disabusing establishment, but a real axe for the frozen ice inside us".

Bleach: Aurora Hunters
Lighting up space with a vibrant glow, a tribe of seven aurora hunters inhabits a bleached out, overexposed universe. Doomed to fade away, they practice a fragile balancing act to reunite with the forces of nature.Shape-shifting, their iridescent bodies will guide the spectators through a charged spectrum of lucid dreaming; a transformative journey, morphing and altering our spacial and physical perception. A mutating emotional landscape of materials texturing the invisible and variating the color of transparency.A dive into the depth of white in search for the rainbow.

Burning Horse
Inspired by the life of the extraordinary dancer and choreographer Waslaw Nijinsky, awardwinning filmmaker and director of photography Elfi Mikesch created a kaleidoscope about love and pain, jealousness, lunacy and death. Figures from ballets like Petrushka and Nutcracker interfuse with figures from his life. Out comes an overwhelming balancing act between human tragedy and blinking humor.

C A N D Y
The Nutcracker (the ballet) is already sold out? Offer your family the inexpensive alternative! We have Tchaikovsky in a can, and a frozen pizza (with hidden sugar) is dancing instead of the Sugar Plum Fairy. In the Queen's cooking show, you learn how to open bags of sour gum or unwrap candy bars. If only there weren't the mice, they eat everything! Soon we'll get to the point that the king himself has to go to the kiosk...
Based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's fairytale within a fairytale (which tells how the Nutcracker became the Nutcracker), we are taking a look at the role sugar plays in all of our lives, how it shapes our society, how it is currently produced and how it used to be produced as well as how it reflects class relations.
Dance Loves Music Loves Dance
Five members of the Thikwa ensemble each choreograph a piece for an external guest dance along the text line of a well-known song. And then? The quiz show begins! Fueled by the music of DJ Grace Kelly and charmingly accompanied by moderators, the audience has to vote to decide on the right music for the movement of the dance pieces. DANCE LOVES MUSIC LOVES DANCE is an excursion to the mainstream and, at the same time, a change of perspective and an interaction on multiple levels. It is about ever new encounters between the artists and the audience and the boundless desire to play. An evening in a community that is looking for the things that make it happy. With music and dance.

Der diskrete Schwarm der Bourgeoisie
Six fine, elegant and very beautiful friends always meet up for dinner. It never happens, they are interrupted every time. The entire artistic action is based on Luis Buñuel's film "The discreet charm of the bourgeoisie". The Thikwa Ensemble and performance artist Anne Tismer try to do everything exactly the same way as in the movie, but turn out to be very surreal.

Description of an elephant
Zou means elephant in Japanese. Godzilla is a creature of the atomic bomb and the God of Zilla. Maybe the elephant is an electric phantom? Have you ever seen a real Zou? One of those dirty gray rags in the zoo with the sad eyes or on Youtube, where they make the same movement over and over again? In this dance installation, the Japanese Butoh dancer Yuko Kaseki and the Thikwa Ensemble question how we perceive broken bodies, experiences and feelings.

Diane for a day
How are identities made visible on stage - and how can we play with them? Inspired by the drag king workshops by the artist Diane Torr, Diane for a day investigates new ways of dealing with physicality on stage. Not only the performance of gender identities is examined and tested - the theatricality of one’s own privileges as well as those of others become the point of departure for jokes, anger and (self-)empowerment.

Die Butterblumen des Guten
What would happen if I could feed my friends to a meat-eating plant? And once they have been fed to it, would the plant then eat me, or would I eat it? What actually separates us from plants? How alienated are we from them in a time where we need them more than ever?Over the course of a séance in the style of the 19th century, the performers reveal their innermost feelings and use dance and song to reach the boundaries of the genre, the unexpected knowledge in which the big show is definitely hidden - somewhere between surrealism, dada and musical.

Don Quixote
As part of the model project "Konzert für alle" ("Concert for everyone"), Thikwa meets the Rundfunksinfonieorchester Berlin. In Richard Strauss' "fantastic variations on a theme of knightly character", the Thikwa performers act in front of, behind and with the orchestra. With large dance scenes, we swirl the adventures of the knight into a sad figure and ask about the boundaries between madness and reason. A fantastic ride through the worlds of a system buster.

Dschingis Khan
Three performers with Down syndrome take to the stage as traditional inhabitants of Mongolia. Dressed in thick fur coats, they parade across the stage and treat the public to ‘authentic Mongolian’ behavior. A setting reminiscent of the ‘human zoos’ popular in Europe at the time Dr. Langdon-Down was making his discoveries. While lighting and sound effects color the inherently neutral action, the performance plays with our judgements and prejudices concerning ‘the other’. A set-up as effective as it is simple, stirring up the discussion of both colonialism and racism as handicaps. In this way, Dschingis Khan creates space for shock and empathy, fear and fascination, projection and reflection.

Extremities
This dance performance illustrates the development of the human body from a single cell through to its ultimate form and focuses on the body in its physicality, complete with all of its strengths and weaknesses. No body is perfect. There is no absolute symmetry, no objective standard. All the same, human beings strive for precisely this; society wants perfection and optimization instead of accepting differences. Extremities is declaration of war using the tools of dance against conformity and superficial ideals that is as visually stunning as it is intimate.

face to face – Gegensätze
Five times two performers, each group performing for 15 minutes – it all adds up to a very colourful evening. Crisply brief and full of surprises. This is how the Thikwa series face to face works. The theme for this first round of encounters is “contrasts”. An open-air theatre series in the courtyard of the Bockbrauerei located at Fidicinstraße 3. face to face – Resonanzen
After the successful start last season, face to face is entering its second round! The principle is based on one to one encounters without the involvement of a director - these are short performance sketches and each scene is about 15 minutes long. Five performances with two performers each, one of them a member of the Thikwa ensemble and the other external, who come together and present their joint consideration of the topic of resonances. Thrown together quickly and stitched together, this is a very diverse evening of work.

Hindernisse auf der Fahrbahn
For many years, the performer Ruth Geiersberger has carried a book around with her and quoted from it during performances: the collected texts of Ernst Herbeck, Im Herbst da reiht der Feenwind. Now she has dedicated an evening to him. Herbeck (1920-1991) spent half of his life in the Gugging Lower Austrian State Mental Hospital. He began writing poetry on the advice of his doctor, Leo Navratil. Together with Torsten Holzapfel, Tim Petersen and Klaus Janek on the double bass, Ruth Geiersberger reads and sings Herbeck poems and folk songs. What results is a musical-poetic tapestry consisting of spoken word, performance, theater, interaction and humor. An evening at the edge of language that gently reveals the tears in the backdrop of the world.

In our first play "Invent Me", Club Thikwa researches artificial intelligence: How does AI shift our understanding of reality and realism? What truth will humans identify with in the future and what will still make us seem human then? The boundary between human and machine is becoming increasingly blurred: AI makes us fall in love, frightens us, makes us rebellious, dependent, lonely and fascinates us at the same time. In "Invent Me" we play with this ambivalence.Performers aged between 8 and 80, with and without disabilities and with different stage experiences, have formed the new Club Thikwa ensemble since February 2023.

LEAP … into the Unknown
Is a plate really just a plate? A dinner party dreams of the leap that makes the impossible possible. The dinner runs into difficulties, the plates really aren’t just plates, but instead a landscape of objects that constantly change and must always be reinterpreted. In their movement, the objects and performers come together to create fantastic images. Let´s jump! Like in a completely new type of circus. But be careful - the objects are fragile and dangerous! Without paying careful attention, everything can end up broken. There is a lot at stake: the shared dream of flying, the dream of daring a new world together - it’s nothing less than that. LEAP ... into the Unknown is just that, the leap into the unknown that is necessary for daring to try to something new.

NO LIMITS 2024
In its eleventh edition, NO LIMITS takes a boundary-breaking look at theater and dance from around the world. Germany's largest and most important festival for Disability & Performing Arts shows what happens when the question of accessibility forms the basis of creative processes and artists with disabilities not only participate but take the lead in all artistic functions.
20 theater, dance, and performance groups from 12 countries in more than 40 performances make up a twelve-day diverse program at Theater Thikwa, as well as HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Ballhaus Ost, the RambaZamba Theater, and for the first time at Theater an der Parkaue.
With fine humor, the feminist collective hannsjana and Theater Thikwa tackle a difficult topic: Who wants to have a baby and shouldn't? And who doesn't want to have babies but should? Big questions about reproduction, parenthood, and care, which here become an entertaining and thought-provoking manifesto of self-empowerment.
It's about stepping into the world, which is a stage, with tanzbar_bremen. What am I willing to show, and what emerges when I take off my beautiful dress? A space of possibilities for the self and togetherness.
How many voices does a person need? Especially when one's own voice fails more and more? The Schauspielhaus Wien asks questions about body images and self-representation in infinitely many facets. Discursive, sometimes funny, touching, and always light-footed.
With their performances developed specifically for the festival, Anna Berndtson and Yingmei Duan connect the five NO LIMITS venues spread across the city. Stage space meets public space. Visitors are involved with all their senses.

Oz, Oz, Oz! (W)Rap the Wizard!
Somewhere over the rainbow, a doubled Dorothy is flying over the Land of Oz. On the way to the Emerald City, not Chemnitz, where things will hopefully take off, she meets strong characters: the brainless scarecrow is actually really happy about the fact that you can get in everywhere for free with a “hunting license”. And the cowardly lion shakily raps a hymn to fear. Only the lady with the red pumps constantly tries to convince the group of travelers of her inadequacy. Thikwa has created a musical! And it’s anything but conventional. Rap meets electronic jazz, the performers sing and dance, but at the same time, the genre is put right through the meat grinder. A performative road movie about individuality and the hurdles of self-improvement.

Protokoll Pankow
Peter Pankow has worked as a writer, actor and visual artist for over 25 years - he is one of the most successful Thikwa performers and a painter who has received multiple awards. Here, this exceptional artist meets Dominik Bender, a very different multi-talent with a knack for wordplay, poetry and photography. The two of them have worked together on multiple productions for many years. Based in part upon very intimate interviews, a text has been created in which these two very different performers examine their artistic self-images and their value in society. A testament to thinking outside of the box - funny, enlightening and highly philosophical.

Schweigen Impossible
How is it possible to reach an understanding when one person blusters and swaggers, the other person can hardly intervene in a comprehensible manner, a third person claims to understand everything, a fourth person rushes in to help using sign language and a fifth person translates everything into dance? A hopeless mishmash of languages like the Tower of Babel? A hilariously funny look at trying out all the options of (mis)understanding? Or a conciliatory coming together of different techniques of reaching an understanding? Factual, post-factual or as fake news – Thikwa sets off into perceived realities. An encounter of translators, interpreters and know-it-alls with people who speak using body language and sounds.

Sieben … aber einmal auch der helle Schein
The number seven enjoys a special status and serves as a source of inspiration in many cultures - from the myth of creation to the seven deadly sins. In Sieben, seven avowed sinners delight in dedicating themselves to their own passions and vices through choreography and music, with a great deal of humor: their lust, their greed, their vanity, their jealousy, their laziness, their sex drive, their consumption. And, in doing so, they continuously and playfully explore morality, which always has to be reinvented and redefined. Texts by the Thikwa performers, created over the course of improvisations and interviews, are transformed into seven song compositions by the songwriter Susanne Betancor, known as Die Popette.

So why – Suchen nach Siegfried
How does it work with sword and blood, with heroism and murder, with love and betrayal when you are young, blonde and courageous, but also really stupid? Siegfried - a fearless superzero, so-to-speak. But a very sweet one. What is a hero? More than a stunt? Or is it all just Tarzan? The beautiful Siggi is someone that others control through her greed. Profit-oriented, a perfect capitalist. And let’s swap out genteel with “friendly enemy”. We are searching for Siegfried. We are remastering Wagner music with new texts and samples. We are asking whether murder has to be part of the principle of masculinity. And what is it like if you first notice far to late, or not at all, that you’re being used? If you end up being stuck in a black hole that you can never get out of? A piece from a time where you are black-and-white.

theater30thikwa – OCCUPY FUTURE
Thikwa is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary! It could be the right moment to reflect upon the long path traveled to get to where diverse theater is today. But we’re not going to that. We’re going to take on the future! Open air and as a theatrical journey through a green courtyard - an approach that can certainly be seen as programmatic. We are going to take on positions and move the figures on the societal chessboard! Reflectively, questioningly, humorously and as a way to think playfully around the corner. The loud megaphones will suddenly become quiet and poetic. What do I wish for the future beyond the slogans but which is still a strong statement? Perhaps something that can be sung together? And the phoenix dances with a new shine along with it. The more we live, the more we learn, the more we are able to clarify, the less we know. Or, to put it completely differently: how do you deal with the future when you can perform an inclusive guest performance on Mars? Can we visit other planets in search of advice or do we end up contaminating them with the expansive nature of the human spirit?

A package is delivered. The contents: body parts that definitely go together, but that don’t function as a whole. A figure of human size stands at the center of the performance. If it is guided, it achieves a personality. If it is studied, an alienation occurs that leads to new abilities. As an object, it provides a metaphorical project surface that invites the viewer to impartial investigation. This can be disturbing, it can lead to unusual situations that cross borders, but also bring new, changeable options into the game. Can we use defects as inspiration for unconventional solutions? Can we bypass defects through cooperations and develop unusual living and coping strategies? A performative encounter of objects and performers with unspoken agreements, cascades of words, the shifting of boundaries and unique rescue maneuvers, accompanied by living jazz singing.

They confront each other and the audience humorously and mercilessly with the utopia of an optimal human being and thus reveal the highly controversial ideas of the ideals and desires for societal acceptance. And, in the background, perhaps the avatars of Elton John, Lady Di, Bud Spencer, PJ Harvey, Michael Schumacher, Otto Waalkes, Angela Merkel, Rune Jarstein or Udo Jürgens might pop up as well.
